See if you can test trip the bike and when you do place it through its paces by making many gear changes. This will tell you how efficiently it transfers from one gear to another. Systems made by Shimano are usually pretty good.

The next thing is the wheel set. Normally all road bikes today come with 700c rims. Rims crafted from aluminum are better than metal is for excess weight but a cheap group of aluminum rims may not stand up to much abuse. You rims and tires are more important than most people realize. But they are where in fact the rubber meets the road and takes all of the abuse so a good set is preferred.

Road bikes are a growing area of the market and they are regaining their recognition from the mountain bikes which appeared to take over the marketplace over the last twenty years. Believe it or not folks are now trading within their mountain bikes or just putting them away in favor of road bikes. This may be just another trend but I think it is because each goes quicker, have more competitions, are best for exercise and give an at all times usability.
